REVIEW: Witches’ Night (2007)

Witches’ Night (2007): Reviewed by BRYAN SCHUESSLER

Director, writer, and producer Paul Traynor made a big splash into the genre of horror with his first film. There is one thing I favor in my horror films, and that is blood, guts, and babes. Traynor hit homeruns in 2 of these 3 categories. He gave me some blood, not a lot, but enough and he definitely gave me quite a few babes. These are all fine ingredients for mixing up a classic B-Movie in the horror genre.

The plot starts out with Jim (played by Gil McKinney) getting stood up at his own wedding. So he and his friends (played by Wesley Walker and Jeff Alba) and his brother (played by Jeff Christian) decide to drive off some 250 miles away and get drunk and go camping.  I enjoyed the characters and felt that they were well-balanced in their personalities. There was a lot of humor and the dialogue really had me cracking up at times. Jim’s brother, the token pathetic older brother who works a crap job as an assistant manager at Chili’s and was continually drinking massive amounts of beer and smoking joints during the film was belting out one-liners and memorable phrases of humorous dialogue the whole film. I really enjoyed that and it added to the whole atmosphere that a bunch of guys with no wives or girlfriends can evoke when left to their own doings. After driving out to the middle of "nowhere" (in reality it was filmed on location in Wisconsin which some may say is the middle of nowhere! Sorry, Im a Chicago native through and through!) and decide to hit the local bait shop/beer depot and in doing so, steal a book on witches that happens to be lying around the counter. They then run into Marge (played by Betsy Barker of Evil Dead fame) and decide to rent a couple of canoes and go canoeing down the river. Once they reach an area to camp at they run into 4 good-looking women (played by Lauren Ryland, Meghan Jones, Elisabeth Oas, and Stephanie Cantu)  who just happen to be camping nearby.

Four guys to four girls. The ratio was perfect, almost too perfect! Duhn Duhn Duhnnnnn!!!

After offering the boys a drink from their flask of "moonshine", the babes start peeling some clothes off and the boobs start flying. Shortly after, the guys start to sense that something is just not right and decide they better get going and get back home. That is when their troubles really begin. The boys also start to develop weird ailments on their skin and in their bodies. Hmmmm…don’t drink anything in a flask from anyone that you do not know. That is my advice on the matter. The film was shot primarily at night and I usually don’t like that because I can never see anything if the director films it incorrectly. This was not the case. It was dark, but no so dark that I missed some good blood and gore. This film plays out like a feature film and at times, reminded me of  Hatchet (2006), only because so many scenes were filmed in the woods. Also, there were some nice boobs in that film as well. One of my favorite scenes is where the coven of witches dance half-naked around the fire and….oops! I don’t want to give anymore away! I guess you better find this film and see it for yourself! I highly recommend this film.  For a directors debut into the world of filmmaking, he sure made a big splash! I look forward to his upcoming films and selection of horror babes.
