Talk about a plot twist: One of the most controversial horror directors on the planet is in town to promote his new family film.

But fans of Takashi Miike on this side of the Pacific may not know that the Japanese shockmeister behind movies like 1999’s “Audition” and 2001’s “Ichi the Killer” does a lot more than just dismember his protagonists. His newest film, “Yatterman” is a live-action adaptation of a popular Japanese animated television series from the late ’70s.

“I think it’s a profession where you’re really sort of pigeonholed easily into genres as a horror filmmaker or an action filmmaker, but I’ve never felt comfortable with such labels,” said Miike, his eyes hiding behind his trademark sunglasses even in the dimly lit midtown hotel conference room where he was being interviewed.
