Writer and director Tommy Brunswick creates an interesting seldom explored world in the sensitive horror epic They Must Eat

The hopeless Sanford finds himself on a relative’s porch after his partner (the duplicitous Maria) throws him out. Bullied by his employers, Sanford finds relief in his sensitive relationship with co-worker Amber and in his burgeoning interest in the ghouls he discovers in the basement of his current crash pad.

Brunswick incorporates elements of everything from Carrie to Willard into this tale and is met with fine, distinguished acting work from John Anton as Sandford and Jessica Hall as Amber. The building of their quiet love is one of the film’s strongest points by far.

It is also fascinating to watch the often neglected world of ghouls come to life. Brunswick indulges in an interesting mythology and relates Sandford’s compulsion with his ravenous companions with the same expressiveness that she gives to his relationship with Amber.

Ultimately, They Must Eat promises great things in the future for Brunswick and her extremely active production company, The Skeleton Factory.
