The Devil’s Ground

darylhannahReview: The Devil’s Ground by Brian Kirst

“Gas Hog? Cute name…” – Carrie, The Devil’s Ground

For those who grew up grumblingly in the country, writer/director Michael Bafaro has a new treat for you – the latest, solid addition in the long line of ‘hick horror’ (you know, backwoods mutants/hillbillies/farmers- what have you – attacking fresh skinned campers and clueless dusty road travelers). Utilizing everything from Deliverance to The Hills Have Eyes (particularly the two recent re-imaginings), Bafaro packs in enough twists and social commentary to make The Devil’s Ground an interesting gem in the rough.

Seemingly on the way to meet her partner in Canada, weary smoker Carrie (an appropriately frayed and honestly compassionate Daryl Hannah) reluctantly picks up bloody hitchhiker Amy (layered, sensitive Leah Gibson). As they drive along to supposed safety, Amy recounts her tale of butchery and sorrow. Trying to save an Indian burial ground from extinction, Amy and her college friends instead find shallow graves containing recently butchered corpses. Soon they find themselves being hunted and brutally murdered, as well.

Bafaro moves things swiftly and interestingly along and the proceedings also include one inventive and incredibly brutal death involving a tree, a van and a knife. The ending almost includes one revelation too many, but Bafaro can’t be accused of taking the easy way out and should be commended for adding some flair to a beloved horror subdivision.

Bafaro is also aided by actor Daniel Probert’s greasy yet heart sore performance as Billy, one of The Devil’s Ground’s mysterious (and doom spreading) occupants.

The Devils Ground is scheduled to be released by Lightening Media in May 2009.

Trivia: Devil’s Ground is also the title of German power metal band Primal Fear’s 2/24/04 recording.
