Writer-director Cory J. Udler’s Incest Death Squad definitely contains all the absurdity that the title suggests –incest, death, nudity (male and female), a ranting (homosexual) Lloyd Kaufman, male rape and enough hick horror ingredients (just where, oh where, are all those small town tourists going?) to keep Texas Chainsaw Massacre fans happy.

What is most surprising, though, is the theatrical, almost stage worthy elegance of the relationship between city reporter Aaron Burg (a fine, layered Tom Lodewyck) and small town hotel owner, Andrea Stein (a sweet Melissa Murphy). Their romance and back stories are delivered with simple assurance and their bittersweet denouement makes one briefly think of Udler in the same breath as such 70’s masters as Coppola, Cronenberg and DePalma.

Of course, Ulder wisely makes sure that Burg (sent to the Northwoods of Wisconsin to research Chronic Wasting Disease) also encounters the bloody vengeance of brother-sister team, Jeb and Amber Wayne (fanatically subtle Greg Wayne and Carmela Wiese). Amber lures sexually active male strangers back to a barn of death, where she and Jeb (in a nice attack on religious hypocrisy) murder them in the name of hysterical Christianity. Of course, the curious Burg discovers their secret and gets swept into their insanity in ways that he could never have imagined.

Ulder works a variety of tones into Incest Death Squad that, while sometimes jarring, are always provocative and beguiling making one long for more demented genius from this new master of low budget horror.
