SURVIVAL OF THE DEAD

in the latest chapter of writer, director GEORGE A ROMERO’S Of The Dead series we are taken to an island, which when I first heard of the plot I was taken aback, I just didn’t see how it was going to work. But Romero delivers with all the classic zombie style we are used too. There were several times throughout the film I actually forgot I was watching a Romero movie, and I believe that was brought on by me being use to the formula of being securely nestled inside a mall or building.

The characters George gives us this time are fun, even though a few are hokey. The sub plot that’s going on during the zombie outbreak at times makes you forget it’s a zombie movie, then BAM!! A rotten flesh eater pops out of the shadows to feast on your body. The trademark Romero kills are there as well, with a few very clever new ones. The blend of CGI and classic effects are blended nicely.

Some of the things I missed from this movie are the defining sounds of the goblins that were featured in Romero’s classic DAWN OF THE DEAD. And I believe the scope of the backdrops Romero used during the film; the goblins could have provided an eerie and ominous feeling of sure terror, the other being the absence of effects master TOM SAVINI’S patented splatter and gore.

I truly believe George has something up his sleeve; he touched on some very cool points during the movie, very tongue in cheek scenes that almost made me giddy for the next ones. All in all it’s the kind of Romero film that keeps us salivating for more and proves why he’s the master of the zombie genre.
