Slumber Party Massacre III Review

Slumber Party Massacre III is the first film that made me really question what goes on at high school slumber parties. If you chose to watch this film, you may wonder too. There are a lot of things I wonder about in this film. Why does the DVD cover contain pictures of actresses not in the movie? Why does the main character closely resemble my 8th grade teacher? How did this film manage to make $1,300,000 in three weeks? These questions seem perplexing but, to me at least, the campy-ness and bizarre nature of Slumber Party Massacre III makes it all excusable.

Despite being the third entry in the series, Slumber Party Massacre III has no relation to the other two films. After a game of volleyball on the beach, which pretty much narrows the killer down to two suspects within the first 15 minutes of the film, a group of girls decide to through a slumber party when one of their parents goes away. Throw in a third possible suspect, the girls’ boyfriends, and a pizza delivery girl, and you have a cast of characters that you won’t really care that much about. However, what Slumber Party Massacre III lacks in…well, everything…it makes up for it in fun.

Showcased in this film are two women who were minor scream queens of the 80s and 90s. Maria Ford had roles in Wedding Slashers, Dark Planet, The Wasp Woman, Dance With Death, The Haunting of Morella, and Deathstalker IV. It seems as if she is modeled after Elvira in this film. The other woman, Hope Marie Carlton, had roles in Bloodmatch, Ghoulies III, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: Dream Master, and Slaughterhouse Rock. She went on to do Playboy several times and soft-core porn in the early 2000s.

As I said earlier, this movie is not that great. It is filmed well, and the acting is just ok, but it lacks any real suspense, any character development, and any sense of reality. In other words, it’s not scary, you don’t relate to the characters, and some things that happen here shouldn’t happen in real life. For example, when being chased through the house by the killer, the girls can’t escape through the back door, which is glass, because the killer put a table in front of it. I’m serious. Points like that, which don’t make sense, bring a sense of hilarity to the film that inadvertently makes it gain points. It’s funny to watch because it just so…out there.

So, if you enjoy bad horror, lots of boobs, and scenes that make you scratch your head and think, “huh, what?” than you should check out Slumber Party Massacre III. Just keep in mind you will not be viewing a masterpiece by any means.
