Family Secret

DIRECTED BY: Geno McGahee
REVIEWED BY: Mario Dominick

The latest feature from Geno McGahee and X Posse Productions (who have previously given us Evil Awakening and Rise of the Scarecrows) is easily their best production yet.

Family Secret presents us with the story about a journalist named Geno McGee (obvious spinoff of the director’s name) who grew up with a very nasty, abusive grandmother named Phyllis who just died. He meets up with family members at the funeral and finds that the family has become made up of very unlikable characters who are constantly at each other’s throats. Soon bizarre occurrences take place and people start turning up dead. A dark figure that resembles the dead grandmother appears to be bumping off certain townsfolk and the evidence of a possible ongoing conspiracy involving a cult that the grandmother was a part of starts to emerge. Geno and a detective try to put pieces of the growing puzzle together while family members and other folks are systematically slaughtered.

Family Secret is a great low budget horror effort with a great story. The cool plot twists thrown in make the film more than just a standard slasher effort and the overall quality of the production is a vast improvement over McGahee’s previous films which prove that he and the X Posse team are learning as they go along. The film improves on Evil and Scarecrows in acting, effects, lighting and other elements and the new talent added to the cast and crew help the film along in terms of creativity and profession.

The X Posse/Webhead Entertainment DVD of Family Secret contains numerous extras such as a director’s commentary, music video of “The Secret” by Sonora, a featurette on “Candle Pin” bowling (a Massachusetts sport that’s featured in the movie), bloopers, auditions, trailers for Family Secret and McGahee’s upcoming anthology Scary Tales, and a photo gallery.
