Sucker Punch (2011)

An action fantasy thriller set in the vivid imagination of a young girl whose dream world provides the ultimate escape from her darker reality. Unrestrained by the boundaries of time and place, she is free to go where her mind takes her, and her incredible adventures blur the lines between what’s real and what’s imaginary. She’s been locked away against her will, but Babydoll has not lost her will to survive. Determined to fight for her freedom, she urges four other young girls – the outspoken Rocket, the street-smart Blondie, the fiercely loyal Amber and the reluctant Sweet Pea – to band together and try to escape their terrible fate at the hands of their captors, Blue, Madam Gorski and the High Roller. Led by Babydoll, the girls engage in fantastical warfare against everything from samurais to serpents with a virtual arsenal at their disposal. Together, they must decide what they are willing to sacrifice in order to stay alive. But with the help of a Wise Man, their unbelievable journey – if they succeed – will set them free.

This 1hr and 50min movie stars Emily Browning, Vanessa Hudgens, Abbie Cornish and Jena Malone.

To be honest, I had to watch this movie twice to fully understand the story and plot. This may be because I was so blown away by the visual effects of the movie. Of course this could also be due to the fact that I wasn’t really watching the movie the first go around – just glanced up every now and then.

I think the reason I like this movie is for several reasons. First, the musical score. This movie does have a kick-ass soundtrack. Music fills up the screen as much as the actors do. And music is just as important in a movie as what an actor says or does. It helps set the tone not only for a scene but for the entire film.

Second, I really like the special effects. To be honest, I can’t tell what’s CGI and what’s wire work and what’s actually real. But if it’s good, I don’t think it matters much. And to that end, Sucker Punch has some spectacular special effects.

Finally, I like the story. I think the director and screen writer found an uniquely creative way to tell what could have been a very horrific and depressing story.

Even though I initially had to watch Sucker Punch twice to zone in on what was going on, when I did, I had a fantastic time. I can also say that this is one movie that will be added to either my DVD or Blu-ray collection.

  1. Although I enjoyed the soundtrack, I have to disagree. To me, most of this movie felt like a music video. I did like the movie, but would have enjoyed it more if the director utilized music less, and instead smothered us with the depressing ambient sounds of the young girls situation.
