Facebook has once again seized the moment of social networking popularity to launch its own film distribution service. With rumors of Facebook charging users to log into the website for years, I guess this is the easiest way for them to finally make more money…because the $1,000,000,000 they’ve made isn’t enough! The Facebook distribution service will be called FlickLaunch. FlickLaunch will charge users $5.00 to rent a film for seven days, which will then stream to them through Facebook. FlickLaunch’s first release will come October 1, 2011 in the form of the horror-thriller, The Perfect House.
The Perfect House will be an anthology film that will tell three stories using various horror film techniques. All the stories will center around a happy couple that are trying to find their potential dream house. The film will star Monique Parent, Chris Raab, and Felissa Rose (Sleepaway Camp). Kris Hulbert serves as the writer and director.
Apparently, this isn’t the first time Facebook has been used for film distribution. Warner Bros. released Harry Potter, Dark Night, and Inception through Facebook, but FlickLaunch is aimed directly at independent film makers. “FlickLaunch was designed to be a simple platform that independent filmmakers can use to upload and stream their films quickly and easily, receiving up to 70 percent of the revenue. The films can be viewed full-screen directly on Facebook, and stopped, paused and resumed within the rental period.” [SOURCE]
Ah, ok. So Facebook won’t be making all the money, just 30% of whatever the film makes. What do you think of FlickLaunch? Is it a good way for independent horror films to get released? It certainly beats RedBox’s rate!
