Legend of The Bog Review

Legend of The Bog, or Bog Body in some countries, is an Irish horror film. And I mean it’s actually from Ireland, not a film from another country that takes place in Ireland, which is kind of rare. Think about. How many Irish horror films can you think of off the top of your head? The only two I can think of are Dead Meat and Boy Eats Girl. So, it was kind of exciting to see if Ireland could replicate horror just as well as America, England, and Spain. Did it succeed? Read on to find out.

The plot of Legend of The Bog centers around six strangers who coincidentally find themselves lost in a huge bog in the middle of no where. This bog is a frequent spot by archeologists because of the number of bog bodies discovered there – bog bodies being bodies that are extremely well preserved because of minerals and other things that are inside the water. Unbeknownst to the group of strangers and a creepy hunter, one of the bodies from medieval times has somehow returned to life. This revived bog body goes on a rampage through town until it discovers the group on a territory line and gets even more aggressive. He’s not really a zombie, though, so it’s less exciting…

Now comes the part of the review where I tell you if I liked or disliked the movie. Well, it wasn’t bad if you look at it from a production level…but looking at it at any other level, and well, it sucks…a lot. The biggest downfall of Legend of The Bog is by far the lack of explanation of anything supernatural that happens. Even SyFy films like Mega Moose gives some sort of terrible explanation to why things are happening. Literally, the bog body just comes back to life and that’s it. Also, the hunter in the film pretty much kills reanimated bog bodies for fun, but even then he doesn’t receive a back story. We just have to accept it and with a movie that is so silly, that’s hard to digest.

I don’t even know if I can call this a horror film for the same reason people debate whether Frankenstein is a real horror film. The killer in this film is not evil or murderous, he just seems confused and disoriented. He’s suddenly brought back to life 1,500 years after he died and of course he’d be aggressive and brutish. Often times in the film he kills people out of misunderstanding or fear, much like Frankenstein did. The kills in this film are filled with cheesy sound effects and screams from the bog body that kind of sound like sex moans.

So, is there any reason for you to watch Legend of The Bog? No. Was it bad? I’d give it a C-. You’d be better off watching indie films on youtube than wasting your time searching for this title through Fearnet. Honestly, skip it.
