Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings (WARNING: Spoilers)

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings is the fourth film in the Wrong Turn franchise. It was released this week straight-to-DVD and serves as a prequel to all the films in the series. This point isn’t the only noticeable difference from the other films because this is the first film to take place in a blizzard or even just the snow for that matter. I had a chance to watch Wrong Turn 4 last night and I have to say it is better than Wrong Turn 3. Although… I don’t think accomplishing that achievement was too difficult…

Wrong turn 4: Bloody Beginnings takes you back to where it all began and fills you in on all the details you wish you knew about America’s favorite incest cannibals in West Virginia. The original three brothers are named “The Hillicker Brothers,” because that’s the name of the woman who “found them,” eating the remains of their parents. They’re taken into custody and sent to a creepy mental asylum in the middle of no where for the criminally insane and/or deformed. After finding a way out of their cell, “The Hillicker Brothers,” let everyone out as well and they take over the place. A couple of years later, a large group of college kids go on a weekend ski vacation. They end up getting lost in a blizzard and are stranded at…you guessed it, the mental sanitorium. Initially, the place shelters them from the storm, but the kids are about to realize there is something there with them much more dangerous than the blizzard.

While I did love this film, I won’t lie – the beginning (no pun intended) is a little rocky. It starts off great with two sex scenes, a straight couple AND a lesbian couple, but then it dives off the deep end for a little while after that. This is probably due to the forward pace of the film. It’s literally like, “Yay! We’re snowmobiling. It’s so beautiful out! I’m a young attractive college student!” to “Oh, shit! We’re lost! Holy shit! We’re stuck in a blizzard!” to “Hey, look, an abandoned place to seek shelter! Thank god!” And it does this in less than three minutes. So, you’re sitting there thinking how did they get there so quickly. This is followed by some ridiculous, and partially plot pick-ee,  points including: the fact that the whole sanatorium has heat even though it’s abandoned, the college kids brought BAGS of weed with them into the wilderness, and that instead of looking for a way to contact help they decide to blast pop music and dance horribly.

But, after these scenes, shit gets real! Right now is the moment the film picks up! Now it turns into college kids vs the three hillbilly brothers. Involved in the ensuing battle is some awesome face mauling, Saw-like kills, a giant skinning chainsaw, and other gory things that make horror fans happy and excited. So there’s lesbian sex and amazing gore, what more could you ask for? Well, this takes us to Wrong Turn 4‘s greatest attribute, at least to me…

Wrong Turn 4 features a cast of college kids who are actually smart! Have you ever watched a horror film where you sat back and thought “Why didn’t they just do this?” the whole time? That is NOT the case in Wrong Turn 4. The college kids arm themselves, lock themselves in the nearest, most sturdiest room, and most of all STICK together! There is even this awesome part where they just charge Three Finger and the other cannibals. A couple of times I even said, “Yeah, girl!” because these kids are really giving the cannibals a run for their money. Sadly, being intelligent and resourceful turns out to be their biggest downfall. The college kids are so prepared and armed that they never stop and consider the worst case scenario…and that’s always when one of them bites it. But still, props to Declan O’Brien for creating a cast who know how to fight back! Tenika Davis is a stand out, by the way.

And being that this is a prequel, the film ends with the cannibals driving off in their trademark yellow tow truck, probably on their way to prepare for the events in Wrong Turn.

Wrong Turn 4: Bloody Beginnings is currently available On Demand, through DVD retailers, and for live stream over Amazon.com. If you’re a fan of the first Wrong Turn, then I would recommend watching this film. Like I said, the beginning is a little rocky, but after about twenty minutes it starts to impress you. I watched it On Demand and then I went on Amazon and bought a DVD copy. You should buy it too! It’ll be a nice film to usher you into the winter horror season!
