Horror Sales: The Darkest Hour, Fright Night, and Grimm

The newest scifi film at The Box Office, The Darkest Hour, debuts in the top 10 but doesn’t pull in the best numbers. It has a budget of $30mil and it’s going to struggle to make that. Let’s see if The Devil Inside can do better next week.  Paranormal Activity 3 exits the chart after a long run and $104mil made domestically.

8 The Darkest Hour $8,978,000

11 8 Twilight/Breaking Dawn 1 $4,643,000 (Total: $273,445,000)

17 29 Real Steel $426,000 (Total: $84,252,000)

Ouch! The Fright Night remake debuts to horrible numbers. I was one of the few people who bought it, and I can see that everyone agreed with me… Cowboys & Aliens is the most purchased scifi film with the last Harry Potter movie close behind.

7 4 Cowboys & Aliens $3,629,000 (Total: $12,826,000)

8 6 Harry Potter/Hallows 2 $3,387,000 (Total: $83,591,000)

15 17 Pirates/Stranger Tides $1,635,000 (Total: $16,983,000)

16 Fright Night $1,311,000

18 19 Super 8 $1,180,000 (Total: $11,696,000)

23 25 Transformers/Moon $869,000 (Total: $43,999,000)

26 9 Harry Potter/Hallows 1 $758,000 (Total: $85,250,000)

Every single horror or scifi themed television show is on winter hiatus. The only shows of those genres to air were reruns, which are listed below. I think NBC is trying to kill Grimm though, because they’ve gotten in the habit of showing two episodes and then taking a break.

Terra Nova (rerun) – 3,200,000

Grimm (rerun) – 2,900,000

Fringe (rerun) – 1,390,000

The Vampire Diaries (rerun) – 970,000

The Secret Circle (rerun) – 830,000
