(John Carpenter, 1988. 93 min, 35 mm) — Carpenter attacked Reagan’s America head-on with They Live, which carries the premise that the ruling class is made of disguised aliens enslaving Americans with subliminal messages. A nameless drifter discovers the secret with glasses that reveal a thinly-veiled reality. We see relevant ’80s-era fears of a declining economy and a culture of greed Carpenter’s satirical aim is true; as Rowdy Roddy Piper says, “I’m here to kick ass and chew bubble gum. And I’m all outta bubble gum.”
