Skum Rocks!

photo-littleThe unbelievable true story of the band that gained massive east coast popularity in the late 1980s despite having a complete lack of musical talent and ambition. A powerful PR machine built their fame, and soon their primary objective was to invent new and creative ways to get kicked off stage without actually playing.

Narrated by Alice Cooper, Skum Rocks!, is described by some as a true-life This is Spinal Tap, and by others as an independent Rock of Ages. Skum Rocks! chronicles the rise, fall, and return of this infamous band that gave new life to the tale of The Emperor’s New Clothes.

Director Clay Westervelt (Popatopolis, HBO’s Miss You Can Do It) felt compelled to further investigate the story of these miscreants, and what he uncovered was nothing short of ridiculous. The band admits to having stacked the deck in the Battle of the Bands by offering extra credit to high-schoolers for their votes. They confirm that their refusal to play covers was only due to their inability to play covers. They admit to devising an early ponzi scheme (300% investment) to finance their first album, which of course was never released. The members of Skum even avoided playing onstage by handing out beer to underage college students and calling the cops on themselves.

But when the original tapes to their unreleased album are suddenly recovered, the now middle-aged band members vow to make a comeback, and to do it right. This time they’ll take it seriously. They’ll play by the rules; they’ll write better songs; they’ll practice. But of course, that’s not what made this band famous in the first place. Unlike other bands, and unlike any other music movie, Skum actually needs to remember that “it never used to be about the music, man.”

Art imitates life as the word has spread not only about the band but about the film, and the list of cameo appearances reads like a Who’s Who of Hollywood and Rock:
Kevin Bacon, Matthew Broderick, Chris Noth, Christina Ricci, Joyce DeWitt, Sharon Lawrence, John C. McGinley, Gabrielle Anwar, Edie Falco, Jamie Lynn-Sigler, Steve-O
Jon Stewart (Daily Show), Bob Barker (Price is Right), Phil Donahue (Donahue)

Alice Cooper, Paul Stanley (Kiss), Vince Neil (Motley Crue), Rudy Sarzo (Ozzy Osbourne), Matt Sorum (Guns n Roses), Frankie Banali (Quiet Riot), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), Richie Sambora (Bon Jovi), Orianthi (Michael Jackson), David Hobbs (2-Live Crew)
