‘Gorgo’ Set to Rise up on Blu-ray

Gorgo blu-ray coverAll of you monster fans of the U.K.’s answer to Godzilla have reason to be happy today.  Distributors VCI Home Entertainment announced their plans to bring the 1961 cult favorite Gorgo to blu-ray on March 19th.  There are no details at this time as to what price point the disc will be at so we’ll have to wait a bit on that detail.  Read on for a full list of special features.

Gorgo was directed by Eugène Lourié and stars Bill Travers, William Sylvester, Vincent Winter, and Christopher Rhodes.

Plot Synopsis:

A volcanic eruption in the North Atlantic brings to the surface a 65-foot prehistoric monster. Two treasure divers capture the creature and take him to London where he is put on display in a circus. A scientist is thoughtful enough to point out that the sailors\’ bonanza is only an infant, and that a full-grown specimen would be over 200 feet in height. Sure enough, Gorgo\’s mama comes thundering ashore, reclaims her offspring and heads back to sea – but not before she trashes a generous portion of London. The special effects in GORGO, provided by Tom Howard – two-time Academy Award winner, are truly admirable. The monster is quite ferocious – except when he wiggles his ears. Released by MGM in 1961.

  • “Ninth Wonder Of The World: The Making Of Gorgo” a new documentary by Daniel Griffith
  • Gorgo – Video Comic Book and Comic Book Cover Gallery

  1. I wonder what film elements VCI has access to. Most prints of Gorgo have been dark and faded out. Horrible VHS, the first dvd release was horrible and the “widescreen destruction edition” dvd was only somewhat better. I loved “Gorgo” as a child and still do; reminds me of “Gappa”. This is a release to keep an eye on. Nice to see kaiju and giant monster films being released on blu-ray. “Godzilla vs. Biollante” and “Gamera The Brave” are the most recent preceded by “Daimajin”, “Destroy All Monsters” and Criterion’s wonderful transfer of “Godzilla”/”Gojira” (1954).

  2. MAJOR UPDATE: VCI claims that their blu-ray will be made from a NEW 1080p HD transfer from either the 35mm negative or master positive. If this is true, put me down for a day one purchase. I wish it could look as good as the blu-ray for Ray Harryhausen’s “20 Million Miles To Earth”; fingers crossed. ^_^
