Doll Boy (Review)

29466_126747450683936_2550084_nI know the picture I used for this review says, “Coming Soon,” but the movie already came out. The selected movie poster was the coolest picture I could find to use as a visual aid for this article. Doll Boy came out in 2010.

Doll Boy is a short horror film about eight unwilling souls who end up bound and gagged and transported to an abandoned building where they are dropped off by villain Doll Boy. Now they must try to escape the property while being hunted down one by one by the sledge hammer wielding freak. Doll Boy is written and directed by Bill “Bloody Bill” Pon.

Ok, Doll Boy is exactly what you would expect from a no budget, B-movie slasher type flick. That means barely any plot, bad lighting, and terrible acting. The killer Doll Boy is even played by a fully grown man. …What? There is most definitely still a market out there for this type of movie, but it wasn’t really my taste.

Here’s what I did like, though. I liked the atmosphere of the entire short. Most definitely the location and the idea of a frightful killer (that wasn’t quite delivered) are the two biggest factors that give Doll Boy an uneasy, interesting feel. I also really liked the special effects. For not having a big budget, the creators behind Doll Boy really pulled off some disgusting and gory scenes. Unfortunately, the location, the atmosphere, and the FX are the only things I liked.

This is the thing… With an actual budget, more of a plot, and as a feature length film I think Doll Boy would be a great movie. If anything, I feel “Bloody Bill” should use the Doll Boy short as a pilot or trailer to try and raise funds for a better feature length adaption. Now that is something I’d really want to see!
