For those of you who don’t know, Buffy The Vampire Slayer has officially continued in the form of a comic book series. After a comedic box office blunder of a film, and seven years on television, Buffy has been slaying vampires on colored pages since mid-2007. Season Eight consisted of 40 issues, equaling about 16 “episodes.” Season Nine started in late 2011 with 24 issues – or 9 episodes – with issue #21 having been released early this month.
Since Buffy’s run as a comic book series has just been released to Amazon Kindle, I’m very into the continuation right now. Hence the reason for this post.
So, what’s happening in the series now? At the end of season eight, Buffy shattered the mystical seed – the source that brings all magic to Earth. This left all demons stranded on Earth, all Wiccans without magic, and vampires with a new way to sire the undead. The Slayer Army has disbanded and Buffy, Xander, and Dawn are living in San Fransisco where Buffy is waiting tables to make ends meet and sharing a small apartment with two other roommates. Despite there still being about 500 other Slayers out there, Buffy can’t help but continue her role as the worlds greatest vampire killer. Enter zompires, an evil rogue Slayer, and this season’s big bad and you have your typical Buffy season layout.
Well, why should Buffy The Vampire Slayer fans pick up the comic book series, more specifically the season nine continuation? For one thing, it’s still cool to see how Joss Whedon would have continued the television show had it all not ended. For those of you wondering, Whedon is still the executive creator and a frequent writer in the saga. Secondly, you get to see a lot of returning characters from the series. Just in the first few issues/episodes, Willow, Riley, The First Slayer, Robin, Nikki Wood, and Andrew make appearances. And the third and final reason is – well, who wouldn’t want to read a great comic?
