The Orphan Killer

The-Orphan-Killer-2011This movie has stolen my heart and is without question one of my new favorite movies. Matt Farnsworth and Diane Foster are two very amazing people, who take so much time out of their busy lives to keep in touch with the fans online. I love seeing that interaction on a daily basis, and that interaction is how I discovered this film. Several months ago, when I was just starting to get my feet wet in the horror industry, my twitter started to gain a lot more followers. One of those followers happened to be Matt. So, of course, I follow back, and that was the first day I learned about Marcus Miller, The Orphan Killer.
This film has a very indie/grindhouse feel to it, but it’s extremely well done. Many try for this feel in their movies and fail, but The Orphan Killer got it just right. This movie has a lot of gore. (That’s totally an understatement by the way) However, I was extremely impressed with the SFX. It was brutal and believable, the best combination. Some of the SFX even had me squirming, and that never happens!  I also really dig the soundtrack to this film. This is an extremely intense movie, and as with all great movies, the soundtrack really adds to the intensity.
The story of this movie is really well done. I like the backstory between Audrey and Marcus. We learn why Marcus is the way he is, and you almost feel sorry for him. The backstory of his mask is pretty awesome too.
Speaking of Marcus Miller; he is one stylish psychopath. Those nuns kept him awfully well dressed for an abused orphan who is locked away. (Not that I’m complaining..) I love the sounds that Marcus makes; from the broken whistling, to his creepy voice. And on the creepy note, Marcus doesn’t say much throughout the film but when he does, it’s in super creepy one-liners. And that mask, Oh how I love that mask! It’s one of my favorites. (I need one!)
The other thing I really loved about this film was the very powerful visuals, mostly centering around the church. The most powerful, in my opinion, being the barbed wire “crown of thorns” Marcus puts on Audrey. The other visuals that really struck me were the scenes of the nuns abusing Marcus. The cruelty in those scenes is some pretty intense stuff. These scenes really bring the story together and show how those nuns make Marcus into the monster he grows up to become.
Overall, I was absolutely blown away by this movie. I will definitely be checking out Matt and Diane’s other films as soon as I can. There are rumors of a sequel and I hope it happens. (Come on guys… DO IT!)
