Grimm: Fantastic Folklore and Mediocre Monsters

I was really excited to finally check this show out, because, I mean, it’s a show about folklore and monsters. I know this show isn’t exactly horror, but it’s all about monsters, so I just couldn’t resist. Sadly, like many movies and shows these days, it was an amazing concept, but the execution was poor. Don’t get me wrong, I did enjoy some facets of this show, but overall I found it a bit lacking.

The show does catch your attention right away in the beginning. (It’s very “monster-y”) I did like the concept of the life of one of the last surviving “Grimm’s.” The thing about this show that really made me wanna watch it, and the thing that made me sit through the whole season, was the folklore that all the monsters was based on. Maybe it’s my inner nerd showing, but I loved that they used real stories from all over the world for the monsters, and used their real names, to boot. I also enjoyed the comedic relief the “wolf” character supplied, as a sort of awkward, goofy sidekick.

The other main reason I wanted to check this show out, and honestly, one of my biggest let downs, was the SFX. Sorry if this is a huge spoiler, but all the effects in the show are CG. As an old school slasher fan, this was a heartbreaker. I like my old school physical effects. It gives things a certain feel that CG just can’t produce.

As I stated earlier, the show starts out fairly decent, but sadly it goes downhill as the season progresses. The story line is kind of lacking, especially for having an infinite number of potential monsters to choose from, they seem to pick quite a few rather lack-luster characters. The show also becomes a bit predictable, no real surprises, which is a bummer.

I had so much hope for this show, but sadly, it kind of fell flat for me. As a horror fan, maybe I had my expectations too high for a prime time television show. I don’t think I’ll be watching the second, or upcoming third seasons.
