THE ABCs OF DEATH became one of the most talked about genre films of 2012/13. Hugely ambitious and immensely challenging, it was unlike anything fans had ever seen. Many loved it and a hell of a lot detested it – but the film was such a creative and financial success that Timpson Films, Drafthouse Films and Magnolia Pictures set forth on the creation of a sequel. The producers signed up 25 of the most exciting and innovative genre directors from around the globe… but there are 26 letters in the English alphabet – and once again, we find ourselves searching far and wide to find… THE 26TH DIRECTOR!

Last year, we scoured every corner of the planet for the next great genre director to complete our all-star roster. UK”s Lee Hardcastle wowed critics and audiences alike with his claymation tribute to commode chaos, and his “T is for Toilet” short was ultimately included in the final film – shown in theaters, festivals and homes around the world.

“Winning the competition was a dream come true and got my video in front of all the right people. Riding off of T is for Toilet I’ve had meetings with MTV, Big Talk and a possible claymation feature still in the pipeline with Ben Wheatley, which is being referred to as MEGAEVILMOTHERFUCKERS. I made friends with many of the ABCs Of Death crew from traveling around festivals with the ABCs film and even collaborated with some of them on my own personal projects since. Being a part of The ABCs Of Death has been the most important moment of my (horror obsessed/filmmaking) life.”

One lucky winner will become the ABCs OF DEATH 2″s 26th director, receiving five thousand dollars cash and having their work included in the finished feature film alongside some of the world”s best talent. But even if you don’t win, you could be discovered through this competition! Every submitted short will be featured on the ABCs OF DEATH 2 website to intrigue, sicken, terrify and crack up audiences across the globe. Also, a selection of the audience favorites will be included on the DVD/Bluray.

So how will the winner be chosen?

We’ll arrive at 12 finalists through two methods:

SIX will be chosen by PUBLIC VOTE, so remember to upload your work as quickly as possible, because the more people you can get to see and vote for your short, the better chance you’ll have at being a finalist!
SIX will be selected via a panel of genre aficionados made up of ABCs OF DEATH producers Tim League and Ant Timpson, Associate Producer Ted Geoghegan, Horror-Movie-A-Day Founder and Badass Digest contributor Brian Collins, Entertainment Weekly Senior Editor Clark Collis, author Grady Hendrix, and Fangoria Managing Editor Michael Gingold.
This way, our top 12 finalists will be a combination of audience and judge selections. These lucky finalists will then go on to the final judging round, where the sequel”s 25 other directors – esteemed names such as Alex De La Iglesia, Bill Plympton, Vincenzo Natali, The Twisted Twins, and Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo – will select the final winner to be included in ABCs OF DEATH 2!

So, how do you participate? First, you”ll choose your own ABCs OF DEATH word starting with the letter “M.” For example, M is For Murder… or ideally something way more creative than that.

Then, you set out to create a short film inspired by the word you’ve chosen. How you interpret the word is entirely up to each competitor. You can shoot live-action, animation, stop-motion, use actors, cut-outs, puppets or animals. The choice is yours – there are no restrictions on content or creativity, provided of course you don’t break any international laws… or bore us.

Last year we were looking for the “HOLY SHIT” factor. This year we’re after the “OUTSTANDING. FUCKING OUTSTANDING” factor

We want your segment to have the ability to stand on its own, as well as being integrated into the final project. We feel it would be best to make each segment a complete mini-tale, with a beginning, middle and end.

Here are some things to think about:

Do you put your death in the beginning, middle, or end?
Do you make your death hilarious, weird, sad or horrific?
Do you have a twist at the tail of your tale?
Do you give it a specific perspective? ie POV
Do you set it in one room or in several locations?
Do you use dialogue or not?
Do you make it live-action or animate it?
Upload your short to Vimeo™ or YouTube™ (Please remember that YouTube may pull your film for restricted material, so if you have content you think is questionable, upload it to Vimeo) and then link to the Official ABCs OF DEATH 2 site. Enter valid contact details before you link your film to the official ABCs OF DEATH 2 website, accept the Terms and Conditions, and agree to be bound by them.
