The Darkness Within (Review)

Charm of HorrorI offer this review as an encouragement for those, routed by major publishing houses, flooding the book markets with the same, infinitely repeating and save “feed”.

I admit, I didn’t chose the book “ The Darkness Within” by Robert Friedrich, on the contrary the book popped up for me. I searched for “something” to read, when the right thing came at the right time.

Before reading I recommend to have a glass of red wine, for example, by the hand, because you will lose track of time.  The author is a master in immersing you deeply into the story, then taking you out of it in a fraction of moment.  This happened to me several times thanks to the epic surroundings, visually attractive while in the matter, absolutely different.  To connect, only on the first look, not relevant scenes, easy and smoothly to one whole, require a lot of craft. And it gets you in the end.

You have to read it all and when the last sequence climaxes, you will be able to see the monumental impact of the story, a story told in such a sensitive manner, that I for a while wavered if it really wrote a man. Don’t be misled, this is the horror genre, with added Sci-Fi elements, but what I like especially – it’s psychological, striking tuning – and unexpected twists. In the end I was thinking:  Yes that is exactly what made this book different and fascinating for me.  Instead of a compilation of words, without any feeling or sense after finishing, this book made me think, left me uplifted, and certain to read more from the author.

I was thinking if someone, who survived such tragedies in the childhood, would be able to rise over and describe it in the book. The figures in the narrative are on first look loners including the main character “the Captain” thus giving you from the beginning the overtone of the book.  However, such loner would not offer to the public register of personal wounds. So looking at the picture of the author I would say, that he might be such a sensitive artist, escaping from the mainstream while courageous enough combines masculine, brusque point of view with the vivid, intense horror-stricken plot and packs it in the emotional, really long-lasting experience. If not enough, the realization, that the story which just blew you away, in reality happened in few hours of human life, would be the reason for one of many “wow”.

This book touched my, yet unrealized, strings and it is not so simple. I really recommend this book for everyone who searches for new experience, and also non-linear horror fans.
