Hunger, an independent rom-zom, produced by aerospace engineer, Mike Souder, is kicking off their Kickstarter campaign just in time for the day of real undying love, Valentine’s Day.
Hunger follows Carl and Rina, two twenty-somethings as they struggle to survive a global pandemic that transforms its victims into crazed eating-machines. Rina is quickly infected, forcing Carl to examine the limits of his love.
Everything is shot through the lens of a handheld camera operated by Carl, giving the audience a front row seat to the horrors of the couple’s journey through their nightmare. Hunger features all the dread and drama viewers have come to expect from a zombie movie but with a romantic subtext that anchors the terror in a more plausible way.
The found footage aspect of the film gives the audience a visceral, unsettling connection to these characters throughout their ordeal. The downside of this style is some people experience motion sickness, but Hunger took great pains to set the camera down as often as possible. That will mean some incredibly long and difficult shots; don’t worry, the crew can handle it. Hunger aims to be the perfect marriage between old and new horror conventions.
When a loved one is infected it should be a heart-wrenching decision to end their lives, even if they request it. “Very rarely do zombie movies take the time to explore this decision, typically consigning the whole ordeal to a couple of anguished looks and maybe a tear or two. With this in mind, I created Hunger,” said Mike Souder, movie writer/director/producer. “The real stretch goal for us is $100,000 or more. At this level, we can change the ending of the movie, add a car scene followed by a second location where Carl could potentially find a cure for Rina.”
Hunger began their Kickstarter campaign on February 12. The campaign will feature a full trailer for the movie and incentives to backers, including being invited to participate as a zombie extra in the movie.
