Who can forget the infamous “Miami Cannibal Attack” in May 2012? For those of you who need a fresher, on May 26 of 2012, a naked man attacked a homeless man on an overpass in broad daylight. The attack lasted 18 minutes, and the victim was beaten into unconsciousness, had most of his face above his beard bitten off, and his eyes gouged out. When officers arrived at the scene of the crime, they warned the attacker to back away from the victim; only getting a growl in response. Officers shot the attacker once and then, after seeing that it had little to no effect on him, shot him another three times – one of which proved fatal. It was believed that the drug “bath salts,” which is growing in popularity is responsible for the occurrence, however, toxicology reports came back later in the next month showing only marijuana in the attacker’s bloodstream.

During the rest of 2012, a handful of other instances involving naked, growling, super strong attackers occurred throughout America and the world, although none reached the mainstream attention that “The Miami Cannibal Attack” spurred. A gay pornographic actor in Canada killed, dismembered, and ate parts of his victim in June 2012. During the Syrian Civil War in May 2013, a rebel is said to have approached a fallen body, cut it open, and started eating its internal organs. I can even remember a story out of Newark, New Jersey in which a man had attacked and eaten parts of his young son. Whether all of these instances were due to drugs and hallucinations we’ll never know, however, officials are always quick to attribute the violent outbreaks to bath salts.

Drug users who use bath salts can exhibit the following symptoms: head ache, irregular heartbeat, cold appendages, vomiting, hallucinations, paranoia, panic attacks, unprovoked violent behavior, increased tolerance to pain, dehydration; and other more serious symptoms including heart attack, kidney failure, and liver failure. There is a related drug that’s just now popping up in America, crocodile, which literally rots the skin of the drug user and makes them appear to be a zombie.

Within the last year, over ten instances of unprovoked, violent attacks featuring naked and growling people have occurred in the United States. These attacks include assaults -both from men and women – in an air port, in a McDonalds, in a train, through a sun roof, and even an attempted assault at The White House. Some of them were caught on video or shown on the news and you can find a few of them in the link below. Speaking of which, the most disturbing part of the story is that The White House and The Pentagon have a 31 page “how to” manual incase a real zombie outbreak ever occurs.

So is this the beginning of the zombie apocalypse? Or is the use of illegal bath salts now becoming a regular thing? Could be a combination of both! As we’ve seen in “The Last of Us” and “I Am Legend,” folks seem to believe the zombie outbreak could start from anything  from mutated pollen spores to cancer treatment drugs. All I know is, drugs are bad, and the scariest part of this odd pairing is that you may never know who around you is a bath salts addict until it’s too late.
