Weekend Box Office Estimates: As Above/So Below comes in at #4 .

asabovesobelowThe weekend is over and box office estimates are in. Since opening weekend is such an important part of a film’s release – it’s usually when the movie makes the most money – a chart has been developed that gives film enthusiasts a good idea of how the films performed over the weekend. A second chart, the actuals, is usually released the next day, but since it’s a holiday today that chart may be delayed or not released at all.

Based on weekend box office estimates, new found footage horror flick As Above/So Below comes in at the #4 spot this weekend with $8,342,000 in ticket sales produced. As you know, found footage features are generally cheaper to produce than other movies, so this is actually a really good start for the movie. Wikipedia has the movie’s budget marked at $5,000,000. If you factor in another couple million for promotion, then it looks like it’s really close to covering its production budget and sending all future ticket sales directly to Universal Pictures.

The other top five movies include Guardians of the Galaxy (#1 – $16,313,000), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (#2 – 11,750,000), If I Stay (#3 – 9,260,000), and Let’s Be Cops (#5 – 8,200,000).

To give you an idea of how well As Above/So Below’s opening weekend estimate stacks up against other horror titles from this year, I’ve compiled all first weekend sales for the pictures below. However, keep in mind that the following numbers were updated from estimates to actuals.
*The Purge: Anarchy – $29,816,000, Paranormal Activity: Marked Ones – $18,343,000, Oculus – $12,005,000, Deliver Us from Evil – $9,740,000, A Haunted House 2 – $8,843,000, Vampire Academy – $3,921,000, The Quiet Ones – $3,880,000, and Devil’s Due $3,808,000.”

“Miles of twisting catacombs lie beneath the streets of Paris, the eternal home to countless souls. When a team of explorers ventures into the uncharted maze of bones, they uncover the dark secret that lies within this city of the dead. A journey into madness and terror, As Above, So Below reaches deep into the human psyche to reveal the personal demons that come back to haunt us all. Written by John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle (Quarantine, Devil) and directed by John Erick Dowdle, the psychological thriller is produced by Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni, Drew Dowdle and Patrick Aiello. Alex Hedlund serves as the executive producer.” – Universal Pictures
