Comic-Con Trailer: The Walking Dead: Season 5 (Screengrab)

Wow. This show keeps impressing me with its fan base.

Sunday’s season five premiere of “The Walking Dead” was watched by 17,300,000 viewers!

Not only is it the most viewed episode of the series, but it was up 1,190,000 viewers from the season four premiere last year. It was also the highest rated show on cable for the evening, receiving an 8.4 Nielson Rating and holding the most viewers in several audience demographics.

In episode 5.1, viewers finally learned the fate of Rick Grimes, Daryl, Michonne, and all of the other survivors after they were taken hostage and stuffed into an empty box-car by evil cannibals. The episode, titled “No Sanctuary,” was written by Scott M. Gimple and directed by Greg Nicotero.

“The Walking Dead” continues next week with a brand new episode on AMC.

“The Talking Dead” companion after-show was also up in viewers, giving AMC a second hit with 6,900,000 viewers for the debut episode of its season four. Remember, the talk show didn’t start until season two of “Walking Dead.” It was the second highest rated episode of the series, only beaten by last season’s finale which was watched by 7,340,000 people.
