Slashers is, and will always be, my favorite horror sub-genre.  My favorites, as most of you may know already, is the slashers from the late 70s to the late 80s.  These slashers all followed the same formula but gave us a different killer and a different twist.  A lot of the slasher from this time period is either loved by the masses or severely hated.  However, one film that rides the fence with love and hate is the 1980 slasher Prom Night starring Jamie Lee Curtis with a smaller role going to funny man Leslie Nielson.  Recently, the film was restored and released on BluRay from the folks over at Synapse.  Just like with all my other blu reviews, this will focus on the release and not the film itself.

When I review a re-release I focus on the release itself instead of the film.  What I look for is artwork/packaging, film quality, and special features.  So, sit back and check out this release.

The artwork for this film is phenomenal.  I am a sucker for original artwork and I can’t stand when they commission these modern artists to do the artwork.  Not all the artists are bad but there is something nostalgic about having the original artwork on the release.  This particular release features the original artwork along with a reversible sleeve featuring another original artwork variant.  For fans and collectors this is a big fucking deal!

The film restoration looks great and the film looks better than it ever has before.  I had the film as part of one of those $5 horror film box sets you can find in the Wal-Mart $5 bin.  The quality of that DVD is decent but this blu transfer is simply amazing.  A lot of hard work went into this restoration and it shows.

Now, when it comes to Synapse and their releases you know know you will have a slew of special features and this film is no exception.  This film has a ton of special features all listed below:

  • Commentary with director Paul Lynch and screenwriter William Gray
  • The Horror of Hamilton High: The Making of Prom Night
  • Added Scenes for TV Broadcast
  • Outtakes
  • Motion Still Gallery
  • Radio Spots
  • Trailer and TV Spots

Bottom line – Synapse has hit another home run!

Artwork – 4.5/5
Film Quality – 4/5
Special Features – 4.5/5
