Blu Review – Last Action Hero (Mill Creek Entertainment)

We really are living in the golden age of media.  When I was little we had just four ways of watching a movie compared to countless ways now.  You could watch a movie on cable/satellite, rent the movie from the local video store, buy the film on VHS or laserdisc, or you could record it on a blank VHS.  The last was how I saw a majority of the films I now love.  I would always rent horror and sci-fi flicks from the video store but my cousin would always record the popular action and adventure films to VHS for me because his family had satellite tv.

One of the films I had watched growing up was Last Action Hero.  This was a film that I had watched so many times that my parents would get pissed at me for quoting it when they would be talking to me.  Sadly, the VHS copy I had was lost in a move and I had went years without watching it.  That was until Mill Creek released the film on glorious blu!

My blu reviews focus on three things; the artwork/cover, film quality, and special features.

As a film collector and avid movie watcher I love when a film is released and the original artwork is used instead of a modern artist’s rendition.  There is just something nostalgic about having the original artwork grace the cover of the film.  Mill Creek is a company I know will not let me down and this is another example of that.  This release uses the original poster and I am glad because the poster used (seen above) is probably my favorite movie poster ever.  Period.  So much 90s action and cheese crammed into one picture and that is a huge plus for me!

Having seen this film hundreds of times on VHS I can safely say that this transfer is amazing.  The film has always been a joy to watch but seeing it in blu is like seeing it for the first time.  The transfer quality is great and up there with the Krull release.  My hat is truly off to Mill Creek for the transfer quality.

Finally, this release, like most Mill Creek releases, skip on the special features.  The film has nothing extra other than a slick transfer of the film.  I would have loved to see some behind the scenes pictures, interviews, trailers, tv spots, bloopers, or something.  This is in my top 20 favorite films and not having any special features is a big let down.

Overall, the Mill Creek Entertainment release of Last Action Hero is a solid release.  The artwork is amazing and the film transfer is top notch.  However, this film does lack special features.  Fans of this film and 90s action need to grab this one to add to your collection!

Artwork – 4.5/5
Film Quality – 4.5/
Special Features – 1/5
