Kino Lorber Releases the Landmark Silent Horror Classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in a Stunning New 4k Restoration by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung

Kino Lorber is proud to announce the Blu-ray and DVD release, on its Kino Classics label, of the landmark German silent film classic The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, in a stunning new 4k restoration by the Friedrich-Wilhelm-Murnau-Stiftung, scanned from the (mostly) preserved camera negative at the German Federal Film Archive. This haunting tale of madness and horror stars Conrad Veidt (Casablanca) as a sideshow somnambulist, Cesare, who is controlled by the mysterious Dr. Caligari (Werner Krauss) to carry out a series of murders in the town by night.
Kino Lorber has released this new 4k restoration of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari theatrically, opening on Halloween at New York’s Film Forum with continuing dates at other theaters across the U.S.
Now, this stunning new transfer comes to Blu-ray and DVD on November 18th, with a SRP of $29.95 for the Blu-ray and $24.95 for the DVD. This edition includes a score performed by the Studio For Film Music at the University of Music, Freiburg, as well as an additional music score by Paul D. Miller (aka DJ Spooky). The disc comes with a booklet essay discussing the film’s influence, written by film historian Kristin Thompson of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Bonus features also include a 52-minute documentary, Caligari: How Horror Came to the Cinema, which traces the production and legacy of this landmark film, as well as an image gallery of stills from the film, and a restoration demonstration that gives viewers a before-and-after comparison of the work that went in to making the film look better than ever before.

Director Robert Wiene and a visionary team of designers crafted a nightmare realm in which light, shadow and substance are abstracted, a world in which a demented doctor and a carnival sleepwalker perpetrate a series of ghastly murders in a small community.
