Blu Review – Christmas Evil

1716316h

Christmas Evil is one of the most essential holiday slashers and the most iconic Christmas horror film to ever be released.  The film is hailed by director John Waters as being one of the most important films for the holiday season.  I watched the film for the first time a few years back and I was sadly not impressed by it.  I could see why people enjoyed the film but it was just not for me.  However, since my initial viewing I have seen the film two more times and it does tend to grow on you a bit.  Anyway, the film is currently being released by the fine folks over at Vinegar Syndrome and they were nice enough to send me a review copy of the film.  Thanks guys.

My blu reviews focus on three aspects on the release; the artwork, the film quality/transfer, and the special features.  Check out what I thought about the film below!

When I see a film is going to be re-released I get excited.  I prefer to have the film’s original artwork.  However, some films just have bad artwork and the company has to replace it with something more and modern.  Christmas Evil is one of the few occasions where the original artwork needs replaced.  Every poster I had seen for the film before was horrible and made the film undesirable.  When I heard Vin Syn was releasing the film I hoped they would have a more modern take on the classic poster and the finished product can be seen above.  With that being said, I am not a fan of the artwork pictured above.  It makes this release feel cheap.

The film transfer/quality on this release is a vast improvement over the previous releases I have seen.  I had seen the film on VHS and the Troma DVD release and this blu transfer is far superior to both those releases.  This is a great looking blu and a solid release from Vinegar Syndrome.

Finally, the film has some great special features for those die-hard collectors.  This release comes with two commentary tracks from director Lewis Jackson, commentary by iconic filmmaker John Waters, interviews with Lewis Jackson and Brandon Maggart, original trailer, deleted scenes, actor screen tests, storyboard gallery, and vintage test screening comment cards.  This release has a lot going on.

Overall, the Christmas Evil release from Vinegar Syndrome is an amazing release of a Christmas horror classic.  Fans of slashers, holiday horror, and films with a lot of special features needs to check this one out!
