Deadly Beauty: Horror’s Scream Queens and Rising Talent: Roxsy Tyler

11020942_918607348171531_1016856826_n“Carmela Hayslett grew up in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she had original aspirations to become a writer because she wanted to “entertain without feeling stared at”. An ironic saying for someone who was later to be known for her acting career. Hayslett was first known for horror hosting in Philadelphia as her zany alter ego “Roxsy Tyler” a character she wrote stories about in her youth. Her break out role was in Apocalypse Kiss as a murderous, muted lesbian named Katia. This soft-spoken eccentric, commonly known for her unique physical features (big eyes and very long legs) often chooses to play odd-ball roles ranging from nerds to underdogs to villains to vixens.

A Few Interesting Notes About Roxsy:

At her book launch party for her first book she donated half of her profits to charity. She donated the largest portion of those earnings to Fox Chase Cancer Center in her Aunt’s name who was diagnosed with Colorectal cancer that year. She also donated to Mothers Against Drunk Driving and The Magic Garden on South Street in Philadelphia.

Has an enormous affinity for Marx Brothers films.

Named her popular horror hosting persona Roxsy Tyler after Aerosmith front man Steven Tyler.

Won Best Supporting Actress of 2011 for her debut role as Rose in Booley, during D’ment’D Cinema’s Reader’s Choice Awards.

In her best efforts to accurately portray her character being Deaf in “Apocalypse Kiss” Hayslett chose to wear ear plugs during her scenes.

Won Best Actress for her performance as Katia in “Apocalypse Kiss” at the HorrorHound Weekend Film Festival on September 7th 2014. Her co-star, D.C. Douglas won Best Actor.”*

1. How did you get into the industry?

I got into the industry as a promotional model for Potent Media. One day they were short an actress for a faux Grindhouse trailer and I got thrown into the lead role. I never had any experience prior to that. I was terrible in the faux trailer but I had a lot of fun and I realized with how much I love the horror genre, why not be a part of it as much as I possibly can?

2. What Scream Queen inspired you most?

None. I have mucho respect for Scream Queens and I like them but I wouldn’t say any of them inspired me to be an entertainer. If anything, I always thought the men of the genre were always the ones who were having all the fun. I’m not much of a girly girl. I like rolling with the guys.

3. What are the next couple projects you are working on?

I play Heinrich Himmler’s wife in a Nazi Horror Flick called Reichsfuhrer SS which should be released later this year. I completed my first kid’s film where I play witch and that’s called The Sugar Skull Girls and I am also in Blood Slaughter Massacre which is on amazon.com right now for pre-order. It comes out in April.
