Horror Sales: The Lazarus Effect comes in at #2 on opening night.

the-lazarus-effect-2015The Friday night estimates are starting to trickle in and it is being reported that new horror film The Lazarus Effect was #2 on its opening night, February 27th. Box Office Mojo is predicting that the new supernatural-horror film took in about $3,800,000 on its first night in theaters, having been edged out of the top spot by the new Will Smith comedy Focus.

Although it may not look like it now, The Lazarus Effect is already another box office horror success story due to its budget. It is reported that only $3,300,000 was used to produce this title and if you factor in an extra two million or so for television spots, it looks like it should take back all of its money by tomorrow night and be considered a box office success for horror.

This can be attributed to producer Jason Blum’s knack for making supernatural-horror flicks on a minimal budget. His previous films include Insidious, Paranormal Activity, The Purge, Ouija, and Sinister – all of which were made for $5,000,000 or less and pulled in massive amounts of ticket sales.

The Lazarus Effect is directed by David Gelb based on the screen play by Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater. Cast members include Mark Duplass (“The League”), Olivia Wilde (“House M.D.”), Sarah Bolger (“Once Upon a Time”), Evan Peters (“American Horror Story”), and Donald Glover (“Community”).
