Does “Scream: The TV Series” Promo Still Reveal Glimpse at New Mask?

We’re officially 30 days away from the premiere of MTV’s scripted show, “Scream: The TV Series.” I’ve been steadily promoting all the updates and news stories ever since the idea was pitched a couple years ago. One thing I’ve learned in that time is that fans are definitely split into three categories. Category #1 – They’re excited for the show as an official, though unrelated continuation of the franchise from Wes Craven. Category #2 – They hate the idea since none of the original cast members are returning, the show will not take place in Woodsboro and MTV has a way of making everything, how should I say, teeny bopper-ish. Category #3 – People who don’t know what the fuck to think. Still, I think the full season trailer that debuted at the MTV Movie Awards in April looks pretty decent and I’ll be giving the show a watch for at least the first two episodes.

One thing that could sway viewers into either category is the inclusion of the iconic Ghostface mask worn by all the killers throughout Scream, Scream 2, Scream 3 and Scream 4. It’s still a little bit of a mystery as to whether or not the mask will appear, and in what form. Back in October 2014, Fun World Company – the business that owns the Ghostface mask – spoke out and said that there were no negotiations in place to use the mask in “Scream: The TV Series.” This particular matter got a little more confusing just one month later when Mina Lefevre – a MTV senior vice president and the head of scripted development – said that a new mask would be used instead; one that would look “darker and more organic.” This left Scream fans pondering how the killer could even attempt to be a newer version of Ghostface, and now we may have an answer.

I was cruising message boards, looking for any unreported castings or updates or spoilers for “Scream: The TV Series” when one poster mentioned something they noticed in the Buzzfeed article “Everything You Need to Know About Scream: The TV Series.” One of the widely circulated promotional stills features a cast member, very dead and bloody floating at the top of a pool. What may have gone unnoticed, though, is the reflection of something or someone in the bottom left portion of the photo. It’s a broad assumption, but if you let your eyes adjust it looks like a hooded figure wearing a mask. You can see the two eyes, the nose… and an elongated mouth that looks kin to the Ghostface prototype. Could this be a hidden easter egg to let us know that the mask will be similar, but not exact? Does this make the television adaption more canonical? Let me know what you think about the photo in the comments section on this article or on Facebook!

Season one of “Scream: The TV Series” will feature ten episodes starring Willa Fitzgerald, Bex Taylor-Klaus, Carlson Young, John Karna, Conner Well, Bobby Campo, Amadeus Serafini, Tom Maden and Tracy Middendorf.
