I miss the golden age of VHS and the Ma & Pop video stores where you could walk in and browse the tapes by genre picking out gems you never heard of because they had clever titles or amazing artwork. Admit it, you rented more shitty films than you care to admit because it had a punny title or cool artwork. It’s nothing to be ashamed of because we all did it. With titles likeDeath Spa, who wouldn’t rent this shit.
Sadly, these awesome titles have become a thing of the past but a few horror titles have popped up here and there bringing this lost art form back to films like Steve: Death Collector, Die Die Delta Pie, and now Death-Scort Service. Death-Scort Service is one title I have been looking forward to for awhile now from Director Sean Donohue and Gatorblade Films in association with my friends over at The Sleaze Box. A few days ago Chris Woods of The Sleaze Box was kind enough to hook me up with a review copy of the film. Thanks Chris!
**Spoiler Alert**The film follows a group of prostitutes that work hard to pay their rent. They meet up with random “Johns” and give them the time of their lives for a few dollars. Things are not always penises and sunshine for these young ladies. Someone has their sights on them and its not just to dump their load. This person is killing prostitutes in gruesome ways.
Michelle starts missing her roommates and calls up a friend when she becomes worried. Her friend tells her that several other working girls have gone missing because they don’t have a pimp for protection. She then tells a story about a girl she met some time ago who was going through a hard time. She gets her hooking and her first John murders her. Michelle receives a call after hearing this story and it is a mysterious man who wants to meet her. The two set out to capture the man after assuming he is the killer. They set the time and wait for him but he is a clever mother fucker and gets the upper hand on them revealing who he is and why he kills.**Spoiler Alert**
I think I pretty much know Sean Donohue by this point after reviewing some of his work but his partnership with The Sleaze Box has mixed things up a bit. Donohue is a filmmaker that is known to have films that are very rich in story while The Sleaze Box are known for making films that are either filled with gore and despicable acts of violence or films so damn sexy you have to turn the lights out and grab the sock with “Pixie” stitched in the end. With the two teaming up it made me wonder how the film would go but my expectations for this was blown out of the water.
The acting in this one is pretty damn good by the entire cast. Every cast member delivers a solid performance which really helps the film flow. With that being said, the acting is not what were looking at here. Instead, we are looking at some of the hottest women to ever step in front of the camera bare it all for the viewer. This brings about one really sexy slasher that is unrivaled in the sub-genre.
The story for this one is the same we have seen so many times before and I like to refer to it as the typical slasher formula. I have said this time and time again but done in different ways the story can seem new and fresh. The story following a killer hunting and killing teens because they were wrongs is nothing new but I have never seen a slasher this dirty and sexy.
Finally, the film is full of on screen kills that take us back to the S.O.V. days. Most are gruesome with crude practical effects but shot in a way that it makes it fun. Overall, Death-Scort Service is the fucking slasher film for the ages. The film is so fucking dirty that you will need to shower after watching it. If you like em sleazy then look no further. Do yourself a favor and buy a copy of this film. You will thank me for the investment.
