10 Horror Sequels I’d Like To See. What Are Yours?

behind-the-mask-the-rise-of-leslie-vernonYes, I know. Some movies are better left as lone rangers and some franchises went on for far too long already. When you find a horror film that you truly love, it’s not uncommon to wish for more, for another hour and a half glimpse into the world that captivated your attention with blood and suspense. There are literally hundreds of horror films produced every year and thousands already available online, on TV and in bargain bins in major retailers. With so many options available, obviously there are a ton of movies that have sequel potential.

Here’s my list my of the top ten sequels that I’d like to see.

What are yours?

1. Jaws
Jaws is one of the quickest franchises and one with the fewest sequels. This may not be a bad thing considering the shitfests that Jaws 3D and Jaws: The Revenge were. Luckily, Jaws is also one of the few franchises that hasn’t received an official remake, but I’d still be board should a company ever choose to make Jaws 5. The world of filmmaking has changed dramatically since the 70s and 80s and the new movie magic that has evolved since could make waves for a giant, attacking great white shark. But, practical effects would be a must!

2. Jeepers Creepers
Jeepers Creepers and Jeepers Creepers II were both extremely lucrative and successful during their theatrical runs in 2001 and 2003. A second sequel, Jeepers Creepers: Cathedral, has been rumored since 2004. Apparently, a script was completed and production was slated to begin, but MGM went bankrupt and sidetracked the movie. It has never recovered and all we have of it are unconfirmed updates from franchise director Victor Salva. Still, fans of The Creeper really want to see another movie…and you can include me in that pool.

Unlike Jaws, Night of the Demons is a movie franchise which received a remake in 2009 following three films that were produced between 1988 and 1997. A direct sequel to the remake was planned in 2013, titled Night of the Demons: After Party, and it was rumored to follow the character of Diana (played by Tiffany Shepis) briefly seen stamping the hands of paid entrants as she attends another Halloween party years later. A campaign was put in motion through Kickstarter, but it failed to reach its $250,000 goal and fell off the radar. Can someone please resurrect Angela and her demons again?

4. Night of the Lepus
Three words… Giant. Killer. Bunnies. Drag a well known scream queen out of retirement for a Janet Leigh/Gerry Bennett role and release it straight-to-DVD. I’d buy it!

5. Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon
The Rise of Leslie Vernon was undoubtedly was one of the hottest independent releases of 2006. In 2012 it was announced that a sequel was in the works, tentatively titled Behind the Mask: The Return of Leslie Vernon, and a video was posted showing just how Vernon was able to survive his death scene in the previous movie. Fans were stoked for the return, however, the team behind the movie let it be known that Anchor Bay was refusing to supply them with a budget and a distribution deal, so they had to turn to Kickstarter to raise $450,000. The Kickstarter only ammassed about 25% of the goal and the film has been in limbo ever since.

6. Silent Hill
As a casual gamer myself, I think Silent Hill (2006) was a fantastic game-to-movie representation of the franchise. The sequel, Silent Hill: Revelation in 2012, was geared more towards a teen audience and felt a little too tame when examined for content. I think a straight-to-DVD continuation is definitely warranted here, one that would really put the chill and fright back into the fans who have followed the Hellish city for so many decades.

7. Sleepaway Camp
Return to Sleepaway Camp (2008) left a lot to be desired, although it did feature the return of the original Angela – Felissa Rose. Since then two sequels – Reunion and Berserk – have been announced, yet nothing has ever materialized. When you want a good “kids in the woods get killed” kind of movie, the allure of Sleepaway Camp is still at the top of the list. With so many rumors existing in regards to the continuation in the franchise, I have a feeling it won’t be too long until a new batch of campers are reintroduced to Camp Arawak. Just please don’t let it be a remake!

Stay_Alive_poster8. Stay Alive
What I really enjoyed about Stay Alive is that it introduced a new villain to horror fans, one that may or may not be based on real history, and combined it with video games. Unlike Resident Evil and Silent Hill, I think Stay Alive was great as a PG-13 horror film and the way it ended left the door wide open for further sequels. Plus, it was extremely successful considering its box office gross. I sincerely hope that Countess Bathory and her army of undead little girls return in the future. I still watch Stay Alive from time to time and would enjoy a sequel for sure!

9. Venom
I know that Venom failed at the box office in 2005 and a lot of people don’t even know it exists. Still, it’s at the top of my straight-to-DVD horror films list for its use of Creole magic when battling a supernatural slasher built like a WWE wrestler. The way that the killer was born and became so powerful is known and it’s possible that the same unfortunate event could happen to another soul in the bayou. The only thing that stands in the way of a sequel is The Weinstein Brother’s not being too keen to produce a sequel when Venom failed to make even $1,000,000. But, hey, we got Scary Movie 5 so anything is possible!

10. Wrong Turn
A lot of people hate this franchise, I mean really hate this franchise. I will admit that some sequels have been better than others, and there have been a few complete stinkers. With Wrong Turn 6: Last Resort (2014) being in the middle of a court case for using a person’s image without permission, sales of the movie have really stalled after a series of recalls. At this point, I think directors and Fox Home Entertainment have milked the cow. I think it’s time to give us one more movie and wrap up the franchise for good with one final film that answers all the questions we’re still asking…like why doesn’t the government do something about the cannibals? They have to know they exist, right?
