WCHS is reporting on the death of Bob Roach of Mason County West Virginia.

“A well-known Mason County resident and man who used stainless steel to sculpt a statue of the famous “Mothman” has passed away.

Bob Roach, 81, of Letart passed away on Aug. 30. Roach sculpted the Mothman statue that is displayed at Gunn Park in downtown Point Pleasant.

“Mothman” is a legendary moth-like creature reportedly seen in Point Pleasant in the late 60s. A book and movie, both named “The Mothman Prophecies,” told the tale of the investigation into sights of the creature.

Jeff Wamsley, owner of the Mothman Museum, said he worked with Roach in the first stages of sculpting the statue, helping him do witness interviews. Wamsley said Roach came to the Mothman Festival every year and set up a booth. Although Roach’s work is highly complimented, he remained humble, Wamsley said.

Wamsley described Roach as a “man of few words, but many talents.”

The statue will be ground zero for the Mothman festival scheduled in September. “
