Sarah Michelle Gellar Addresses Buffy Reboot: “I’m Not Sure How It’d Work Now.”

Sarah Batch Two

A few months ago NBC announced that franchise creator Roger Kumble was working on a television continuation of Cruel Intentions, the hit 1999 drama that spawned two direct-to-DVD sequels. The show is rumored to follow Sebastian Valmont (Ryan Phillippe) and Annette Hardgrove’s (Reese Witherspoon) son, which would mean that Kathryn Merteull (Sarah Michelle Gellar) is now an aunt. While none of the original cast members have been confirmed as returning to the new television continuation, Refinery29.com recently spoke with Gellar about her thoughts on the reboot.

This, of course, led the interviewer to asking Gellar about her thoughts on a “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” reboot. For those who’ve forgotten, Buffy originally started as a 1992 horror-comedy before transitioning to television in 1997 under the guidance of Joss Whedon. The show lasted for seven years – five on the WB and two on UPN – before ending and heading into the world of comic books. Ever since then, however, there has been constant talk of spin-off movies and a reboot, with a remake even being on the slate in 2011 (lucky that never materialized).

Morgan Baila at Refinery29.com asked the actress, mother and food entrepreneur about a Buffy reboot and this is what she had to say:

Morgan: Do you think there will ever be a Buffy reboot?
Sarah: It’s so hard. Buffy is the story of an adolescent girl, and the demons are the metaphor for the scary horrors of high school. I’m not quite sure how that lays out now. If you have something that is really, really good, do you take that and mess with that formula? I don’t know. I don’t know the answer to the question.
