Horror Sales: The Darkness Made Bank This Weekend.

Horror fans must have been waiting for the next big release because The Darkness made a lot of money over the weekend despite being 1,200 short of the typical wide release. The first anticipated release since 10 Cloverfield Lane in March, The Darkness is reported to have made $5,180,000 in ticket sales at the American box office as of May 15, 2016. That’s an average of about $3,000 per theater, with the film playing in only 1,755 theaters across the nation.

The Darkness managed to take the #4 spot, being beaten only mega-hits Captain America: Civil War and The Jungle Book as well as Money Monster. The problem from here on out will be word of mouth, which could be particularly damaging at this point considering that The Darkness is receiving negative reviews from the majority of critics. Still, I remain hopeful that the latest film from producer Jason Blum can hold on to the #4 spot or debut at #5 on the all important weekly chart this Friday.

All things considered, The Darkness is already hit when examining its budget – an estimated $4,000,000. If you factor in $1,000,000 for promotional costs, The Darkness has already made back its entire production budget as of today and anything else will go directly to the bank. I’d like to believe the film starring Kevin Bacon could make $10,000,000 by weeks end, which would be another incredible feat within itself.
