Conjuring Headed for #1? Sequel Makes $16 Mill on Friday!

conjuringpostersmallCould we get the first #1 horror film of 2016?

Estimates are starting to come in and experts are reporting that The Conjuring 2 made bank on Friday night! Released by Warner Bros. to 3,343 theaters nationwide, James Wan’s latest directorial effort made $16,400,000 in ticket sales, coming in as the #1 movie in American cinemas on Friday, June 10. Should strong word of mouth and devotion to the original movie carry over, The Conjuring 2 should be able to take the #1 spot at the box office on the weekly chart by narrowly beating out Warcraft.

A quasi-sequel to 2013’s The Conjuring, The Conjuring 2 was produced on a budget of $45,000,000, media marketing included. I think there’s a good chance that all of that money will be recouped by the week’s end. Should The Conjuring 2 blow away expectations, it would become the first true #1 horror film in recent years beside Ouija in October 2014 and Goosebumps in October 2015. Similarly, The Conjuring made $16,956,000 on opening day in 2013 and reached #1 that year.

Experts are also predicting The Conjuring 2 could make as much as $38,000,000 by the weekend’s final count.

Top 5 on Friday:
The Conjuring 2 – $16,400,000
Warcraft – $10,710,000
Now You See Me – $8,400,000
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shadows – $4,000,000
Me Before You – $3,070,000
