A lot of people were pissed when the last season of “The Walking Dead” ended with the cliffhanger to end all cliffhangers. Although spoilers for Negan’s kills were available online since June or July, I’m sure the majority of you waited it out until Sunday to see who was on the receiving end of Lucille. As it turns out, the wait was well worth it and the hit AMC show saw its most watched episode since the opener of season five. Despite not breaking any ratings records for the show, now in season seven, the premiere episode of season six – The Day Will Come When We Won’t Be – was watched by a whopping 17,029,000 live viewers. You can add another 1,000,000 or two for streamers and DVR. It smashed the competition and was the most watched show of the night.

The Talking Dead after-show saw an equally impressive boost in viewers thanks to the unveiling of the cliffhanger. The talk show actually saw its most watched episode of all time with 7,566,000 live viewers. It narrowly edged out the after-show following episode 04.16 “Conquer,” which notched 7,530,000. Both shows saw a steep decline in season six, but maybe the loss of [spoilers] and the brutality of it all will be enough to keep the show going strong this year. Or, it could work adversely, and people could tune out because I’ve seen a lot of posts about it being too violent. Only time will tell, but at least the opener was a big hit with fans. See what I did there?
