On Friday, The Bye Bye Man saw its theatrical release in 2,200 theaters around The United States courtesy of STX Entertainment. As of right now, the horror film from director Stacy Title is aiming to be the studio’s third biggest release following comedy Bad Moms and last year’s horror hit The Boy. Capitalizing on the trend of small budget meets big success, The Bye Bye Man was produced on a budget of $7,500,000 with promotional adding an extra $10,000,000 to that. With an overall budget cost of $17,500,000, it stands to reason that The Bye Bye Man will be a success story for all those involved when seeing that it made $13,370,000 in ticket sales this weekend according to Box Office Mojo.
Coming in at #4 with $13,370,000 is a marvelous achievement for Stacy Title. Though she is a former Oscar Nominee, The Bye Bye Man is the first film she’s directed in ten years. Not only that, but the film has recouped about 60% of its total costs in its opening weekend alone. It’ll surely pass the $17,500,000 mark by the end of the week, especially with Sunday ticket sales, and it could become the first horror hit of 2017. Move over Underworld 5: Blood Wars! It also stands to reason that The Bye Bye Man could leap frog Rogue One: A Star Wars Story by this Friday to come out as the #3 movie of the week considering there was only $400,000 separating them on the weekend chart. Strong word of mouth will be the determining factor.
I think The Bye Bye Man could end up making $22,000,000 by the weeks end and that was way more than I was expecting.
