By this point it is no surprise that I am a huge fan of Blaxploitation.  I grew up watching it and I continue to share my love for it.  As much as I love Blaxploitation, I love the works of H.P. Lovecraft just as much.  I have some of his creations tattooed on my flesh so to say that I love his work is truly an understatement.  Several weeks back I received a press release from Horror Pack.  As I was getting it together to share on the site I noticed a film that really stood out to me.

The film, Badass Monster Killer, looked like a movie made specifically for me.  I looked it up on imdb.com and noticed that it had several regulars of the YouTube channel Smosh on it.  Once again, if you know me you know how much time I spend watching Smosh, Vanossgaming, Good Mythical Morning, Guudeboulderfist, and Epic Meal Time.  I was really excited for this film so I did some digging and found it on Facebook.  I reached out to them and they were kind enough to send a review copy my way.  Thanks guys!

**Spoiler Alert**The film follows Jimmy Chevelle (Duncan) who is an agent for an undercover organization that fights the paranormal.  The organized crime in Camaroville has taken a hit when a Cthulhu cult moves in and takes over the drug and prostitution trade.  As Jimmy starts to investigate the new cult he learns that they are the ones responsible for his partner’s death and things get personal.**Spoiler Alert**

When I saw the press release for Horror Pack I knew I would love this film.  I had no idea I would love it as much as I did.  It incorporated all the clichés and stereotypes that I love about Blaxploitation with the fun mythos of H.P. Lovecraft.  I thought that it would be hard for a movie to top The Undertaker for best movie I have reviewed so far in 2017 but Badass Monster Killer did just that, it killed it.

The acting in this one is b-movie gold.  The cast find themselves thrust into clichés of classic monster movies and Blaxploitation.  They spoke the jive, submerged themselves in monster movie glory, and delivered some amazing one liners that I will be quoting for some time.  Their reactions to certain situations were questionable if you don’t put yourself in the mindset that you are watching a Blaxploitation/b-movie hybrid.  The cast was perfect.

The story for this one is a wet dream.  We get the nitty gritty of what made Blaxploitation films so fun.  We get the racial stereotypes, the action, the fighting, and the style that made these films so much fun.  This works surprisingly well when combined with the Cthulhu cults and organized crime.   It takes a made genius, or a deranged fuck, to realize that these two types of films work well together.

Finally, the film is a visual feast.  The film is scene after scene of gorgeous visual effects set against a colorful backdrop that you rarely see in indie horror – or big budget horror as a matter of fact.  As visually stunning as the film may be, it is also home to some impressive practical effects.  We get some great creature effects that play on the stories and creations of H. P. Lovecraft, as well as, some fun kills that are very bloody.  Overall, Badass Monster Killer is the fucking shit.  Period.  This is the most fun I have had with an indie film in sometime.  Fans of Black Dynamite, Dolemite, and Blacula need to watch this.  I recommend watching this as a late night double feature with The Neon Dead from Wild Eye Releasing.  Check it out, man!
