Latter Day Duff- Recent Films of the Subspecies Legend. By Brian Kirst

The beautiful and talented Denice Duff is best known for her passionate acting in the Subspecies series. Duff, a world renowned photographer, has also made her mark as an actress and director in a of couple recent horror filled projects, as well.

The Straun House. 2006. Asylum Entertainment.

t87421ly668As a compassionate doctor working in the mysterious Straun House, Duff delivers a versatile, multi-leveled appearance here. Never less than gorgeous, Duff commits to every moment with a passion and intensity that is as natural as it is effective.

Cabbie Michael Dare (a forceful Stephen Polk) agrees to an experiment in rage therapy under the ‘brilliant’ Dr. Straun as opposed to entering jail on a trumped up assault charge. Soon he is fighting for the release of his soul as he finds himself addicted to Straun’s potent therapy methods. After the discovery of a mutant beast held captive in Straun’s basement, he finds himself fighting for his life, as well.

There are some decent twists in Polk and R. Pauley, Jr.’s script and director Jeff Broadstreet keeps things moving swiftly. There also several entertaining effects sequences and a host of genre veterans to keep everyone sidetracked from any of the production’s more noticeable weak points. Besides Duff, there is Andrew Divoff bringing his maniacal flair to Straun, John Kassir (Tales from the Crypt) as a creepy assistant and Karen Black as Dare’s possible double dealing lawyer.

Vampire Resurrection. 2003. Shadow Entertainment.

213970Duff not only effectively stars as Victoria here, but she capably directs another cast of genre veterans. Science Fiction regular James Horan, Jillian McWhirter (After Midnight, The Dentist 2), Julie Michaels (Jason Goes to Hell) and Geoffrey Lewis (Devils Rejects) are all smoothly directed by Duff – who provides Ron Ford and Jose Prendes’ script with several nice visual flourishes and a few exotic dream sequences in moves of cinematic bravery. Duff does not shy away from the red stuff either and produces a couple truly effective death sequences. An alley murder of a young club singer and Michaels’ perilous fall to death are vividly rendered and well crafted.

Duff also keeps the plot – involving the release of Victoria’s violent ex-husband from prison and the re-emergence of her centuries old vampire lover – clipping along and her understanding of the acting craft particularly reveals itself in Lewis’s comically effective portrayal and through the actions of Marilyn O’Conner who winningly plays Victoria’s feisty, conspiracy obsessed aunt.
