AAAAAH!! Indie Horror Hits, Vol.1 (2008): Reviewed by BRYAN SCHUESSLER
A short while back I wrote up a short blurb that just mentioned that this compilation of independent horror shorts was coming out and presented by Crypt Club Productions Inc..
Imagine my surprise when I was handed a copy of it to view and write a review on. I tell it like it is and I will say this, Miguel Gallego of Crypt Club Productions Inc. and producer of this compilation sure picked some winners! I watched all 7 shorts, varying in running times and themes, and was extremely satisfied with every one.
This compilation truly was enjoyable to watch, each film covering different themes and styles eloquently, and had me thirsting for more. I do hope that Crypt Club Productions Inc. continue this trend and put out more quality compilations and let these shorts see the light of day (or should I be saying the dark of night???) for fans of the horror genre to enjoy.
Now on to the shorts themselves:
My favorite short was Oculus, directed by Mike Flanagan, because of the excellent choice of dialogue and acting. Scott Graham, the only character in the film besides a dog, gave an awesome performance and carried the whole short-film.
Written by Mike Flanagan & Jeff Seidman, the concept of the short-film really had me from the get-go and created so much interest and had me hooked immediately. It centered around a mirror that….OH…I am not going to give away any plot. You will just have to see it for yourself, folks! Oculus was my favorite, among many great shorts and also the longest, with a running time of 32 minutes.
Some others that I really enjoyed were Old Friends (directed by Kevin Greutert), The Crypt Club (directed by Miguel Gallego who is also the creator of the dvd), and The Veil (directed by Mike Jackson). I can say that each and every film offers something fresh and unique to the horror genre. Miguel Gallego picked a fine assortment of horror horderves.
I hope to see these talented directors and writers on future projects. It would be a shame if such talents were to go to waste.
