May 29–LAS CRUCES — If you see strange antics — or even what appear to be bodies — in local pecan orchards this summer, don’t worry.
The nuts are fine and you can still look forward to pecan pies and cookies and a healthy harvest season. The mayhem is due to another movie project here in Hollywood on the Rio Grande.
“I am working on producing a short film for a suspense/horror short film that I co-wrote with Marcus Leed, one of my UCLA film school colleagues. This piece has a very unique story and is set within the pecan orchards here. I want to shoot it in late summer and then enter it into film festivals and use the short to finance a longer, full-length feature version,” said filmmaker Rajeev “Raj” Nirmalakhandan.
And this could be your chance to be a star. Casting sessions for “The Orchard” will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Saturday at Creative Media Institute (CMI) Theatre in Milton Hall on the New Mexico State University campus.
“We’re looking for a large group of children, maybe about 50, ages 5 to 12 and all ethnic groups. We’re also looking for women ages 20 to 45,” he said. All ethnic groups are needed and some featured roles may be chosen from those who apply.
