Modern Day Rippers – Van Buren Boys

Modern Day Rippers and Van Buren Boys: Hot and Horror-ible! Concert Review by Brian Kirst

www.vanburenrocknroll.com…

Modern Day Rippers, featuring (among others) legendary Chicago punker and horror lover Germ on vocals and Richard Bastard (from another fright based musical wonder, Hotlips Messiah) and the tight garage laden Van Buren Boys recently blistered up a frigid January evening with an energetic  evening of attack dog punk and rock and roll.

On January 9th, both acts tore apart Ronny’s – an awesome plywood and gum dive in Chicago’s Logan Square- with fierce heart and demented power.

With their string jeans and connected swagger, the Van Buren Boys proved themselves to be a sexier, harder laced The Strokes. Breathing oily rock n roll heart, these guys are not only wickedly in tune with each other but had audience members feverishly hunting them down after their set to purchase ‘six string love’, their latest CD.

Meanwhile the Modern Day Rippers (friend ‘em up on Facebook, folks!) took pogo punk to deliriously new extremes. With a name every Universal Monster lover can appreciate, the Modern Day Rippers attacked urban malaise, sobriety and the CTA with vicious fervor. Germ threw himself (as always) into his front man role with pouncing joy and made one wonder how powerful his future performances will be – as he improves immeasurably with every show he performs.

Wearing their outsider charm like terror ridden amulets, both these bands deserve much success and love from rhythmically inclined fright fans and all music appreciators (from admittedly much less cool walks of life) as well.
