A Perfect Getaway (2009)

For their honeymoon, newlyweds Cliff and Cydney Anderson, head to the tropical islands of Hawaii. While journeying through the paradisaical countryside, the couple encounters Kale and Cleo, two disgruntled hitchhikers and Nick and Gina, two wild but well-meaning spirits who help guide them through the lush jungles. The picturesque waterfalls and scenic mountainsides quickly give way to terror when Cliff and Cydney learn of a grisly murder that occurred nearby and realize that they’re being followed by chance acquaintances that suspiciously fit the description of the killers.

I’ve watched this movie several times and it never seems to get old. I do have to laugh each time I hear Milla Jovovich give her best Valley Girl impression, but other than that, I really enjoy her acting in this movie. If this is a cat-and-mouse thriller, Milla  portrays the innocent victim or prey through the entire movie never revealing her dark past until the bitter end. There’s almost a naive spirit or quality about her performance that’s captivating.

Steve Zahn, who play Cliff Anderson, comes across as a paranoid little weasel. Always suspicious of others and never trusting anyone, he never pulls off the happily married newly wed. The glances that he gives Milla throughout the movie are a tell tell sign that something’s not quiet right.

Tim Olyphant and Kiele Sanchez portray Nick and Gina. These two pull off a wild southern couple having a grand old time just being themselves. And by playing southerns, they capture the essence of the southern charm about never meeting a stranger. Even though these two come across as naive, you sense that they know more than they are letting on – that they too don’t quiet trust Cliff and Cydney.

If it wasn’t for these three (Milla being the third), I don’t think I would enjoy the movie as much as I do. It seems they came to play (and maybe have fun) with this movie and their roles. I’m not sure Steve Zahn ever knew  how to come across in his role and he seems like the duck out of water.  For his role, you needed somebody that  could come across as acold calculating killer that oozes charisma and charm…I’m thinking Jack Nicholson or Michael Douglas or even better, John Travolta.  You needed somebody in his role that you could believe could manipulate Milla Jovovich’s character.

Bottom line: I really like this movie. It’s entertaining and engrossing as the cat-and-mouse scenario unfolds. Unfortunately Steve Zahn sticks out like a sore thumb.
