Tagline – “…the thing i greatly FEAR has come upon me”

Sometimes I just want to watch something that does not look cheap.  I do enjoy low budget films, however, sometimes the camera makes the film feel cheaper than what the film really is.  That is why some directors need to spend a little more time editing the film to wash away that “family vacation” look of the movie.

Some directors have been making their films look like grindhouse films of yesteryear and giving their film that grainy look.  Director Joaquin Montalvan showed that some extra editing can make the film look like so much more.  His film The Legend of the Hillbilly Butcher really impressed me with the effects he placed on to the film.

He was able to make the movie look like it was filmed on damaged film which removed the low budget look.  The movie was also a great movie which made me request his other two films Hole and Mobius.   He was nice enough to send me both films and I would like to thank him for that.

**Spoiler Alert**The film follows Ed.  Ed is a convict that has lived a rough life.  Ed’s mother abused him severely when he was a child.  She tied him to a chair and tortured him for days until one day he fought back and killed her.

Years later he is living the life of a janitor and hearing voices that drive him to do unspeakable things.  He kidnaps young ladies, mostly blondes, and tortures them before smashing their skulls in with a hammer.**Spoiler Alert**

Montalvan is a film maker that is great at making original and unusual films.  His movies do not follow your typical movie pacing and formula but still deliver quality entertainment.  He has a style all his own and really uses it to deliver his vision and story on to the film in his own unique way.  His movies are unlike any other directors I have seen and often flirt with the line of thriller and suspense.

The acting in this one is actually very well done and Respass does an amazing job in his role.  Respass puts his heart and soul in to his performance and it shows.  That, or he truly is unstable like the characters he portrays.  The story is actually very detailed and complex.  Unfortunately, it does not unfold well on screen.  The movie is extremely hard to follow.  I often had to pause and rewind because I thought I missed something.  A little more work on the cutting and editing would have helped the flow of the film.

Finally, the effects are amazing.  The film offers a lot of great practical effects and on screen kills.  This movie will, without a doubt, satisfy those with a blood fetish and an eye for gore.  Overall, this is a solid effort by Montalvan.  The film has beautiful women, great gore, and the look of the old days when VHS ran supreme.  I highly recommend it.
