Upcoming Amityville Horror Movie Gets New Title, Official MPAA Rating but No Release Date.

This is getting beyond frustrating at this point.

In March 2014 it was announced that Blumhouse Productions, Dimension Films and Miramax were producing a new sequel in the Amityville Horror franchise. This was to be the first big budgeted, theatrical release in the series since the remake in 2005 starring Ryan Reynolds. Four largely independent, not entirely canon sequels have gone straight-to-DVD since then, so fans of one of the biggest supernatural horror franchises of all time were looking forward to the opportunity to watch the horrifying events unfold in Amityville, New York once again! The official release date was set for January 2, 2015.

However, it was later announced in September 2014 that the release date for the movie, Amityville: Awakening, had been pushed back. There have been no further updates with the movie since then and the public supporting Amityville: Awakening have not received any important updates. Rumor has it the movie received stellar reviews during test screenings, but the one flaw was that the ending was the weakest part of the experience and the majority of participants were unhappy with it. Taking that into consideration, Blumhouse Productions reportedly went back for some reshoots and additional photography in hopes of sprucing up the movie.

Things may finally start chugging forward again, though, because a few days ago a bit of information in regards to this upcoming title hit the internet. Apparently the name of the movie has been changed from Amityville: Awakening to Amityville: Reawakening. Yeah, big difference there… The other piece of news is that the film finally received an official MPAA rating and it’s going to be R! An R rating is usually attributed to a movie with excessive violence, language, substance abuse and nudity… and that makes me all the more excited for Amityville: Reawakening!

Hopefully we’ll get more updates soon like, ya know, a release date or new teaser trailer.

Amityville: Reawakening is written and directed by Franck Khalfoun, whose previous credits include High Tension, P2 and Maniac). Producers who served on this title include Alix Taylor (Feast, Piranha 3D), slasher documentary maker Daniel Farrands, Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Sinister and The Purge) and Bob & Harvey Weinstein. The film stars Bella Thorne (Forget Me Not, “Big Love”), Cameron Monaghan (Vampire Academy, “Malcolm in the Middle”), Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hitcher, “Revenge”), Taylor Spreitler (“Days of Our Lives,” “Melisa & Joey”), Thomas Mann (Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters), McKenna Grace (“The Young and the Restless”) and Hunter Goligoski.
