“SCREAM: THE TV SERIES” Episode 2.04 – Happy Birthday to Me
[BEWARE: ALL MAJOR EPISODE SPOILERS AHEAD]

What A Slow Opening: The episode starts with Audrey digging in a field at night, burying the bloody cork screw that Ghostface used to kill Eddy in the previous episode. At the same time, Emma is making out with Kieran when she thinks she sees Ghostface. Turns out he’s really there and he stabs Kieran to death in a very Sydney and Billy Loomis in Scream kind of way. Only this time, it’s a dream and Emma wakes up and begins writing the dream down in the journal that psychology teacher Ms. Karen made the class start. Emma goes downstairs to see her dad, Kevin, and her mom, Maggie, arguing and proceeds to seriously call them out on their shit. Audrey has just about the same “worst wake up” scenario only she’s waking up to the bloody cork screw in her bed, Ghostface having dug it up during the night, and him calling her to gloat about it.

Can I Have A Side of Extra Filler?: We continue with the boring stuff, with Eli returning home in the morning and Kieran questioning his whereabouts, warning him that “people talk” and to “not ruin this town for me.” It’s also Kieran’s birthday. Brooke is in her bedroom texting Jake before school, frustrated by his lack of answers… because he’s dead and Ghostface is using his phone, but she doesn’t know that yet. I’m not really sure what they’re saying because this show does a horrible job at showing messages on screen. Eli meets Emma at school and tells her he’s going to apply at the coffee shop she works at and that he wants to throw Kieran a surprise birthday party, despite his cousin’s wishes and the plans he and Emma already made together.

Oh, The School Has A Library: Emma, Audrey and Brooke are in a library looking area of the school for a study hall period. Audrey gets more text messages from Ghostface, but of course I can’t see what the fuck they say. Audrey thinks Gustavo, who is sitting across from them in the library, could be the killer and snaps a few photos of him. The girls talk about Kieran’s surprise party before they’re abruptly interrupted by a fire drill. Audrey somehow manages to hang back and goes through Gustavo’s things. On his lap top she finds incredibly drawn pictures of The Lakewood Six, however, Emma’s picture is all covered in blood.

Stahp With the Filler: Brooke’s dad goes to the police station and wants to file a police report since Jake is missing. Sheriff Acosta doesn’t seem so sure, but Brooke’s dad forces him by reminding him there is some sort of blackmail between them. Again? Noah runs into Zoe outside the high school and asks her to be his date to Kieran’s surprise party. Kieran talks to Emma outside his house and wonders if she’s too fragile to celebrate, thinking maybe a relaxing evening, just the two of them would be better for her psyche. Sheriff Acosta stops by the nurses office at the high school and asks to see why Jake’s been absent from school and the nurse says he called out with strep throat.

Now Things Start to Get Interesting: Eli and Emma are decorating her house for Kieran’s surprise party and almost kiss. Emma decides it’s best to get as drunk as possible right away and starts downing shots. Kieran arrives and isn’t that excited about the party, but the entire house of high schoolers celebrates his birthday with a round of shots from a bottle that was inexplicably dropped off by Jake. After the round of shots, everyone gets sick and starts throwing up on Emma’s front lawn. Everyone gets so sick that they leave the party, everyone except The Lakewood Six, Zoe, Gustavo and Eli. Gustavo is sure the drinks were spiked and that they’re about to hallucinate from whatever it was. True to his word, everyone starts going a little crazy. Brooke sees Gustavo’s eyes on fire and has visions of Jake tormenting her. Eli starts spraying ketchup on everything. Kieran trips bad and has to be put to bed by Eli and Emma. As they’re putting him to bed, Kieran reveals that Eli that used to kill dogs much in the same way that Emma killed a pig when they were younger.

Flash From the Past: Audrey hallucinates that Ghostface is coming after her, but it’s revealed to be her dead girlfriend Rachel in the vision. She apologizes to Rachel and takes full responsibility for her death last season and the duo begin to make out. When she breaks out of the hallucination it turns out that Audrey has been making out with Noah the whole time. Zoe is watching them, but instead of being mad that Noah cheated, she has a PG-13 make-out fest threesome with Noah and Audrey. You read that right!

Run, Emma, Run!: Emma trips bad and eventually walks off into the woods after following a little girl. She starts having disjointed memories of the past until she sees Ghostface looming in the trees nearby. Emma thinks it’s just a hallucination, but this time it’s real and Ghostface lunges at her with the buck knife. Emma dodges it and runs away with Ghostface right behind her. He’s starting to catch up to her, but she runs into her dad, Kevin, in the middle of the woods for some reason and he checks for Ghostface, who has since disappeared. Back at the house, Sheriff Acosta has arrived and they tell him they were drugged by whatever Jake left for them. Emma says Ghostface attacked her and no one seems to believe her except Audrey. Audrey points her finger at Gustavo, telling the group that she found his pictures of them and Emma’s specifically was covered in blood.

It’s Not Over Yet: Emma’s dad gives her a picture of them from when she was a baby and says he’s skipping town again, though this time it’s to seek treatment at a rehab facility. Sheriff Acosta bothers Gustavo in his room and asks him to take out the trash and do his chores. When Gustavo goes downstairs, Sheriff Acosta finds the Brandon James/Ghostface mask in a drawer and calls Jake’s parents in Mexico to alert them that their son is reported as missing. Noah runs into Zoe and asks if she’s upset about their drug fueled threesome. She says she’s not yet she proceeds to break up with him anyway. Emma and Kieran are talking and Kieran is honest in telling Emma he doesn’t believe Ghostface was there and he thinks she left treatment too early.

One Last Hurrah: Eli tries to tell Emma that he believes her about Ghostface, which pisses her off because she’d rather believe it was a nightmare – because that would mean the murders are about to start again. Now it’s the night of the beauty pageant and Brooke and Zoe make the final five girls. During an intermission, Brooke decides to give Gustavo a second chance (he never did anything wrong in the first place and had bloody pictures of your friend so I don’t get this). The woman announces Brooke as the beauty pageant winner. When they pull the cord, blood falls on Brooke instead of confetti in an homage to Carrie. An exact replica of that famous scene, except that Jake’s dead body is mixed in with the blood and his body falls all over the stage. We close out on everyone screaming.
